P & H FarmsOwn-seed, organically-grown Tomato Plants available from P&H Farms: have you secured your summer supply of home-grown tomatoes by planting the varieties you love? Hearty plants started at P&H Farms (Certified Organic) in Port Hope are still available in individual pots or trays in 7 different varieties:

  • Classics: Bushsteak, Beefsteak, Glamour, Ultragirl, and Bonny Best
  • Heirlooms: Principe Borghese, Brandywine, and Old German

P & H Farms grew over two dozen varieties of tomatoes from classics to heirlooms in 2009. Starting with about 6 acres of tomatoes, P & H Farms has reduced its tomato garden to benefit from its own seed stock this year. Steadily creating a tomato field with mulched rows, to reduce weed-growth over the summer, the plantings have reached the point of comprising 11 400-foot rows of at least 12 dozen plants of each variety. A harvest of 40,000 tomatoes is expected for 2010. P & H Farms has chosen to focus on tomatoes this year for a variety of reasons, including their health promoting qualities and taste, as well as seed diversity preservation. P & H Farms is also looking ahead to modes of organic processing for storability.
